Kitchen (You've Never Had It So Good)

(Gob Squad)

> Intro

We have seen the Gob Squad quite a few times already by now. Once in Tallinn, a couple of times in Berlin, once in Munich, and some more here and there. And however astonishing it may seem – the Gob Squad’s extremely witty, warm and intelligent characters achieved a very engaging, direct contact with audiences everywhere. And they could not have managed at all without that contact since not a single Gob Squad play comes to the stage without audience participation.

OK, that will probably scare you off – you get the feeling that you’ll be asked to participate in some kind of alternative hocus-pocus. But that’s not the case at all. If you take Andy Warhol’s film The Kitchen as the basis for the play, the wish to bring back the 1960’s at its best, and a playful attitude, then the evening cannot be anything other than very enjoyable.

German and British students put the Gob Squad together some ten years ago and they have remained true to the ideals of their youth and to their dynamic spirit. They are characters with an open mind…Hey, let’s let them speak for themselves:

”The Gob Squad set itself the objective to reconstruct the film The Kitchen even though not one of them has seen the film since it is not possible to watch it nowadays. How can they successfully reconstruct it then? How do they know if they get it wrong? How did people dance in 1965? What did they talk about? Did feminism exist already? Or did it come along later on? Gob Squad’s Kitchen is a journey into the past and back into the future. We are looking for the original, authentic, here and now, real me, the real you, for the hidden profundity under the glossy surface of modern life.”
